Harry Chapin Food Bank raises more than $375,000 at two major events

Fort Myers, FL – The Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida (HCFB) raised more than $375,000, thanks to community support at the food bank’s two largest events of the year, Empty Bowls: Naples and WINK News Feeds Families Hunger Walk.

Empty Bowls: Naples  raised about $60,000 on Saturday. About 1,400 people gathered at Cambier Park, where they sampled soups prepared by 49 restaurants. With a $15 donation to the food bank, each participant selected a bowl made by Collier County students, professional artists and others in the community. Approximately 2,000 bowls were featured at the event, including high-end pieces that were featured in a silent auction. The empty bowls symbolize those in our community who go hungry.

The food bank also raised about $315,000 at WINK News Feeds Families Hunger Walk on Jan. 17. About 1,000 people came to Miromar Outlets in Estero to walk against hunger in Southwest Florida.

HCFB can provide $6 worth of food for each donated dollar. Because of these two events, the food bank will be able to provide close to $2.3 million worth of food to children, seniors and others in need in our community.

“Both of these events help support our food programs throughout the year,” said food bank President and CEO Al Brislain. “We are truly thankful to everyone who supported Empty Bowls and Hunger Walk because, without the community’s support, many of our neighbors in need would have an even more difficult time putting food on the table.”

The Harry Chapin Food Bank, an affiliate of Feeding America, solicits, collects and stores quality food for distribution to families and others in need through a network of 150 nonprofit agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties that provide food to more than 30,000 people monthly. The Harry Chapin Food Bank distributes more than 1 million pounds of food each month. In 2014, the Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed 19.6 million pounds of food and other grocery items valued at more than $33.7 million. This is roughly the equivalent of 16.3 million meals to people in need.
