WINK-TV Anchor Lois Thome dubbed everyone “Hunger Walk ambassadors” at the kickoff breakfast Tuesday for the 2017 WINK News Feeds Families Hunger Walk, and charged them with the duty to go out and spread the word!
The breakfast, hosted by the Northern Trust Bank in Fort Myers, brought together sponsors and sponsor hopefuls to learn more about the Ninth Annual Hunger Walk, which will be held Jan. 21 at Miromar Outlets in Estero.
This is the biggest annual fundraiser for the food bank, raising $305,000 last year. In 2017, our goal is to top that total!
The WINK Hunger Walk is presented by Garden Street Iron & Metal, Inc. and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 21 and the walk starts at 9:30 a.m.
Thome, who is also a food bank board member, served as emcee, hosting a “fact or fiction” game with questions about the Harry Chapin Food Bank and the clients it serves. The competition was spirited, and shed more light on how the food bank tackles its mission.
Thome noted that we all have watershed moments that led us to become involved in the fight against hunger. Hers came when she visited an elementary school and saw a child wrap up half of his sandwich at lunch, put it in his pocket, and take it home to help feed his family. “This elementary school child had so much compassion,” she said. “I was amazed.
“You know what? This should not happen in our community,” Thome said. “That was my watershed moment.”
