Signs of the times

Sandy Sweeney and Brenda Hughes, neighbors for 16 years, are always looking for ways to give back to the community.

The Charlotte County residents have organized a kids’ fishing tournament for the last 13 years, but the coronavirus pandemic forced them to cancel this year’s event. They saw how the coronavirus was impacting the community and wanted to help.

“We decided to raise money to help feed our community as we were very troubled by the overwhelming need,” Sandy said. Being quarantined spawned creativity. So they created signs with the words “Stay Safe and Stay Strong. We’ll get through this together.”

They sold the signs to people for display at their homes or businesses. After making enough money to pay for the materials, they raised $800 to help the food bank. They still have some signs available and would like to sell them so they can make a second donation.
