As we move into the ninth month of the Coronavirus pandemic and the economic crisis that the pandemic has caused, we celebrate that we have distributed 30,088,157 pounds of food into our five-county footprint. We celebrate that more than a quarter of a million people we serve each month can turn to our food distribution programs for food they desperately need.
Never before in the food bank’s history have we ever distributed so much food! Our ability to do that is rooted in the firm foundation we have in place that equips us with the ability to scale up our operations. Our team has proven as each month of this pandemic passes, that we are resilient, persistent and committed to our mission to lead our community in the fight to end hunger.
Our food sourcing team searches tirelessly to provide food for those who are hungry. When the pandemic struck, our entire food souring model altered. Prior to the pandemic, we would rescue food from our retail partners and spend roughly $37,500 each month on food. Now we are spending $1,000,000 dollars a month on food and our ability to do that lies squarely on our ability to raise the necessary funds.
We have faced challenges at every turn and yet our commitment to our mission has never wavered. Our volunteer department works tirelessly, with some volunteers putting in multiple shifts. Our warehouse crews work under intense pressure and intense heat. Our drivers travel thousands of miles to distribute food to those who are hungry. Our programs consistently adapt to meeting the changing needs as they continue to arise. Our team’s efforts are a shining example of the resilience required to keep meeting the relentless demand for food in our community.
Thank you to the many that have helped our food bank serve 25,073,464 meals into our community since this pandemic began in March. Together we are doing all that we can to ensure that the quarter of a million people we serve each month don’t have to go hungry. Thank you for being our partner!
