Harry Chapin Food Bank and the Coronavirus 1000 609 Harry Chapin Food Bank

The primary role of the food bank is to source and distribute nutritious foods and fresh produce to our partner agencies for their distributions as well as our own distribution programs. We are proud to report that we provide an average of 70 percent of the inventories that our partner agencies distribute at no cost to them. Our own distribution programs are designed to address the gaps of need that our partner agencies can’t meet. The food bank is truly the safety net of our community.

Thomas Battle, Harry Chapin Food Bank employee, delivers produce to Grace Place for Children and Families, a food bank partner agency.

Our Partner Agency Program works with over 150 partner agencies throughout our five-county footprint. Our partner agencies are thoroughly vetted, and they are trusted extensions of our mission. We have played an active role in helping our partner agencies remain open during this past year and helped them modify their distributions to help them meet the necessary Covid protocols. Every partner agency has changed their distribution models; some agencies moved to an appointment-only model, some moved to a drive-thru model and others have moved all distributions outside. Your food bank has increased our deliveries to our partner agencies to ensure that we can help them accommodate the constant growth in demand.

We are so proud of how well our partner agencies have responded to the pandemic and its incredible challenges. Our partner agencies are our largest distribution points and a key ingredient in our ability to ensure that no one has to go hungry.

Because of the generosity of so many and the strength of our partner agencies, your food bank distributed 4,380,728 pounds of food into our community in March 2021. That is a record-breaking month for us. “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” The sage words of Mother Teresa point to our collective actions that are providing food to more than a quarter of a million people who are hungry each month. Our gratefulness is ceaseless.

This week alone, we distributed 892,815 pounds of food into the five-county footprint. Thank you for being our partner and thank you to our partner agencies. Together, we are making a difference.
